150 Best Financial Advisers for Doctors- Our Exclusive List" by
Dennis Murray
The go-to money magazine for family practitioners begins by saying, "Finding an adviser is easy. Finding one who has a lot of experience working with physicians, and who understands their often-unique financial situations, takes time and effort."
This is the second time Ben Utley has been listed as one of only
two advisers in all of Oregon who was admitted to the list.
Ben Utley Added To Registry of "High Quality Advisors"
September 9, 2004
Jack Waymire, the author of "Who's
Watching Your Money?: The 17 Paladin Principles for Selecting a
Financial Advisor"
(Wiley, 2003), says, "The most important decision you will ever make for your
financial future is the selection of the right financial advisor." His
organization, Paladin Investor Resources, has added Ben Utley to its
Registry of high quality
advisors. Paladin Investor Resources provides awareness, education, information, tools,
and services to investors who rely on advisors to achieve their financial goals.
Black Enterprise magazine July, 2004
"Follow the Banker: Bank-loan funds allow you to capitalize on the
nation's need to borrow money" by Donald J. Korn
Ben Utley helps readers find one more way to increase investment
income during times of abysmally low interest rates.
Utley says bank-loan funds "make sense if you
want an investment that produces income, if
you have a moderate risk tolerance, and if
you’re seeking a fixed-income investment that
is less susceptible to interest rate increases.”
However, Utley is quick to point out that there’s
no free lunch. “If you want protection against
rising interest rates along with higher yields
than you’ll earn in a money market fund, you
must give up something. With bank-loan funds,
you have a slight risk of capital loss.”
The Wall Street Journal May 26, 2004
Investors With Little Ready Cash, Take Note of Mortgage Swaps by
Ray Smith
This article recommends that commercial real estate investors "tote
the note" when selling properties. Certified Financial Planner Ben Utley
points warns sellers that these mortgage notes can be illiquid. "They're
generally hard to sell, and if you do sell there is a discount
involved," he says. "There's no public market for these kinds of things.
There are less buyers for them."
The Register-Guard (Eugene, Oregon) April 24, 2004
Featured on the front page of The Register-Guard's "Homes" section, this article
helps first-time home buyers find ways to make a down payment through creative
financing. One way might be to use the $10,000 penalty-free withdrawal from an
IRA but the author cautions home buyers to think twice before using the
strategy.
Physician's Personal Advisory February 1, 2004 Pick Up an Extra $5,000 a Year- Risk Free by Louis Pilla "It makes no sense to sit on unneeded savings while carrying and paying interest on a variety of obligations such as mortgages, auto loans and... credit cards." Ben Utley advises busy physicians to use excess savings to pay down debt. The interest saved could easily exceed $5,000 per year.
The Wall Street Journal January 28, 2004 Some Earn Higher Rates by Buying Mortgages by Ray A. Smith The recent run up in home prices and the slump in rates on bank deposits are pushing some investors to look for alternatives. Ben Utley is quoted on some of the basics of mortgage note investing.

Ben Utley advises physicians, "If you really want to buy real estate, it makes more sense to invest in a rental property with professional property management." After all, REIT's are stocks, too.

Inside Information August 20, 2003 Looking for Investment Advice? We can help! by Bob Veres In a discussion of financial planning best practices, this industry newsletter points to Ben Utley's definition of a sound client-advisor interaction. "He says that the professional advisor needs to control the planning process, but not the actual decisions. 'I try to determine the client's values and motivations using some life planning tools,' he says. 'Then I apply this to the universe of strategies, where only value-appropriate strategies fall through the screen. THEN I give these options to the clients and let them decide. If I control the process, and they control the decisions, then we are likely to make progress."
Physician's Personal Advisory June 1, 2003 What the Bear Market Teaches Us by Louis Pilla Active management won't protect you from downturns [in the market], Utley says. An active manager has to outsmart not just one or two people, but everyone in the market. The risk of having the manager mess up, he notes, is greater than market risk.
Physician's Personal Advisory March 1, 2003 Should you pay for financial planning advice by the hour? by Louis Pilla The feeding frenzy of new entrants to the financial planning industry has spawned a host of new business models, and one is pay-by-the-hour advice. Ben Utley admonishes physicians to just say no. He says "planning is a process, not a product" and the hourly billing model forces the physician or another professional to carry the financial vision and the process... Most physicians are far too busy to do that."
Virtual Office News February 1, 2003 Virtual Office Focus by David J. Drucker In this financial planning industry trade newsletter, Ben Utley's practice is profiled for its use of technology as a way to improve inter-office efficiency and enhance the quality of customer service.
