"Follow the Banker: Bank-loan funds allow you to capitalize on the nation's need to borrow money" by Donald J. Korn
Ben Utley helps readers find one more way to increase investment income during times of abysmally low interest rates. Utley says bank-loan funds "make sense if you want an investment that produces income, if you have a moderate risk tolerance, and if you’re seeking a fixed-income investment that is less susceptible to interest rate increases.” However, Utley is quick to point out that there’s no free lunch. “If you want protection against rising interest rates along with higher yields than you’ll earn in a money market fund, you must give up something. With bank-loan funds, you have a slight risk of capital loss.”

In a discussion of financial planning best practices, this industry newsletter points to Ben Utley's definition of a sound client-advisor interaction. 'I try to determine the client's values and motivations using some life planning tools,' he says. 'Then I apply this to the universe of strategies, where only value-appropriate strategies fall through the screen. THEN I give these options to the clients and let them decide. If I control the process, and they control the decisions, then we are likely to make progress."
